"stop the steal" capitol Riot

January 6, 2021

Months in the making, the "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington, D.C. drew massive crowds to the National Mall. After a series of speeches at decried the election as "stolen" from Trump, many of Trump's supporters were incited to stop the certification of electoral votes that would confirm Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. This led to rioting, rampant vandalism, violent assaults, multiple fatalities, and unlawful entry into the Capitol building, forcing officials to evacuate and delay the certification.

While hundreds out of the tens of thousands of attendees have been charged with federal crimes, there are still many unanswered questions about what caused the attempted insurrection. Many individuals arrested for their crimes that day point to online personalities and pseudo-news outlets that pushed unsubstantiated claims of election fraud and continue to push the country towards instability, division, and destruction. The Attorney General of the District of Columbia is currently suing members of the Proud Boys and OathKeepers for their alleged roles in planning, promoting, and carrying out the attack on the Capitol.

The footage I captured that day has been used in a number of trials, investigations, and documentaries, including by the New York Times for their visual investigations into the attack on the Capitol building and Proud Boys, the Discovery+ documentary January 6th, and the Washington Post's visual forensic's team. The footage was cited as critical evidence in the trial of Guy Reffitt, a Three Percenter militia member who was the first to stand trial for his actions at the Capitol.
